Microline PENTAX, a leading manufacturer of reposable instruments for minimally invasive surgery, announced today that it has acquired Starion Instruments™ Corp., a privately held developer of surgical technology for sealing and dividing soft tissue. The acquisition provides Microline with an innovative product line that is complementary to its own and marks the company's first foray into the cardiology and Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) markets.

Randall Michel, M.D., FACS and Bernard Weinstock, M.D. are well versed in the use of seal and cut modalities for ENT procedures, having conducted numerous clinical studies during the course of their careers. Their most recent study, “Tissue Welding Forceps Usage in Superficial Parotidectomy: A Clinical Assessment”, was published in the January 2008 issue of the American Surgeon (visit Starion’s “News” page for details).

Michel and Weinstock found that by using Starion’s ENTceps in place of a conventional electrocautery device they were able to improve safety and clinical outcomes.
